Gallery of student/faculty work

The Library Committee started batting around this idea in the Spring term of '07 and it's developing into an exciting project. We would ike to create a better physical and virtual space in the library to display student and faculty work. On the physical side, we plan to rearrange the front circulation area to allow for more possibilities, like displays. We currently display student art, art by the students of Nancy DeHonores, and a couple of projects by Michael Bunch's students. We'd like to do more and are welcome to ideas.

For the virtual gallery of student/faculty work - we will be installing a community driven software called MediaWiki on our server. Here's a description of MediaWiki from the site itself (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki).

"MediaWiki is an extremely powerful, scaleable software and a feature-rich wiki implementation, that uses PHP to process and display data stored in its MySQL database. Pages use MediaWiki's wikitext format, so that users without knowledge of XHTML or CSS can edit them easily. When a user submits an edit to a page, MediaWiki writes it to the database, but without deleting the previous versions of the page, thus allowing easy reverts in case of vandalism or spamming. MediaWiki can manage image and multimedia files, too, which are stored in the filesystem."

What does all of this mean? Well, we - students, staff, and faculty - can use this site to:

  • build a community of shared work
  • collaborate with local organizations (Maritime Museum and Historical Society, for example) to pool resources about the area in which we live
  • build more of an interactive community for the library, campus, greater community...who knows? This project has great potential.

Nadine:Hi. See my comments under Update on Weed/Reseed project. They might fit here better! I love the idea of an interactive virtual community that expands the College beyond its own physical campus. More than that, if the Foundation and the College Relations Dept. (that's me, folks!) are to do their jobs, we need to be moving into that world rapidly. I'm thrilled that the Library is forging ahead. At the same time, I'm hoping that the strategic use of these great new technologies for making connections becomes a strategic College-wide and coordinated priority. How can we help make that happen?
